I had a similar problem. Somebody suggested converting the eps to pdf with
ps2pdf, and then converting back to eps using pdftops, which comes with xpdf
(a windows binary is available). This removed the illegal commands for my
files.
I dont suggest using pdf2ps, which comes with ghostscript, because it produces
low level ps files, the fonts are especially bad.
