Indeed, this would not be a good use of your time, since there are many
Type 1 CM packages around these days.

For what it's worth, TeX Live and most other distributions have used
Type 1 fonts by default for several years.  The problem is that Red Hat
and other distributions are based on an old (really old) version of
teTeX, before the Type 1's were generally available.  There's nothing we
(the TeX community) can do to change past Linux distributions.

If the mentioned type1cm and other packages mentioned in the FAQ don't
work for you, you might want to install the latest teTeX or TL 2003 and
go from there.
