What's wrong with \usepackage{type1cm}?

Alternately, you could look at Latin Modern (but it doesn't have any 
math support yet).

FWIW, TeXLive and most contemporary / up-to-date distributions use Type 
1 by default. Have you tried getting and installing TeXLive? You should 
probably contact Red Hat if you're using their packaged TeX (which is 
probably woefully out-of-date).
