is it on purpose that if one runs
pdflatex -no-shell-escape ...
Let's check an older pdftex from before we added shell-escape
to see if this ever gave an error.
Anyway, I agree. Either pdftex or pdflatex (that is, graphicx) or both
should give some kind of msg and exit status should not be zero. Hmm. -k
