And we we would have written tlmgr in Python, it would not be usable on
the majority of platforms, would still be stuck in a stupid Python 2->3
transition, etc etc.

You are invited to rewrite it, in particular since you are a very
proficient Python expert, it shouldn't be a problem.
There is already some ancient parsing code from Jim (in Python 2).
