I cannot reproduce the error (win11). But I suspect that it is due to
some dll problem (libwinpthread-1.dll?).
The 64bit gzip.exe seems to depend on libwinpthread-1.dll, and the
32bit gzip.exe does not depend on the dll.
As a test, I replaced by the 32bit gzip.exe (r66874).
