Thanks, Jonathan. dvitype produces nearly 1,000 lines of output and
appears to succeed. The actual .dvi file as well as the dvitype output
are attached here.
And, since I guess this list culture is good with MIME attachments,
the MWE .tex file from my original message for good measure, since its
size is dwarfed by the other two.
