I've looked at the page and not found any oddities that are relevant to
this discussion. Please would you provide some examples of such Wikibook
oddities.

It does contain many examples such as

> \cos (2\theta) = \cos^2 \theta - \sin^2 \theta

which I think is what most LaTeX authors would write.
