Personally I like it like this. I
I update regularly and always check first the changes with
tlmgr update --list.
A normal update shows 5-20 updates/autoinstalls/removals and it is
easy to skim and to decide if one of them could be a problem.
This means that I get changes/removals slowly spread over the year
and don't get hit by all of them at once when I switch to a new
texlive version.
