Thank you both! As I said, I still have a lot to learn about Ubuntu
(Linux).[1] On the other hand, I think I have been very careful about
installing with Synaptic any program that depends on TeXLive (2007);
and by careful I mean I don't ---that's why I built TeXmaker myself.[2]
[1] I bought ``The Official Ubuntu Book'', 3rd. ed., but its target
seems to be Windows GUI users wanting to use a nicer and better GUI.
There are not even index entries for bash, .bashxx, .profile, PATH,
etc., and /etc deserves them merely a couple of lines! My not-so-
advanced knowledge of Mac OS has been a lot more useful with Ubuntu
than that book.
[2] Despite my ignorance, TeX Live in Ubuntu is working really, really
well (and I mean *really* ---more than twice faster than my desktop
PPC!). I have all my personal fonts (Lucida, MinionPro, etc.) working
exactly as in my Mac desktop and laptop. The amazing diffps
http://homepage.mac.com/michael.g.sternberg/tex/index.html
shows there is not the slightest difference between the same book
typeset with both Macs and Ubuntu. Now ---if I only could manage to
build TeXworks in Ubuntu, all my TeX work would be done in it!
Best,
Axel
