Hi Sebastian,
tex --version, and I get:permission denied.
Hmm, a new problem. The existing teTeX shouldn't be the issue.
Anyway, try doing
ls -l /your/texlive/root/bin/i386-linux/tex
(replace /your/texlive/root with the actual directory you installed
into, of course.) If those permissions don't look something like
rwxr-xr-x (with the x's), something very strange happened at installation.
(If you're not using GNU/Linux, replace i386-linux with the appropriate
system directory.)
Also try
which tex
to make sure that it is finding the tex you intend. Assuming you use bash,
type -all tex
will show you all the tex's in PATH, which can also be helpful.
We'll get to the bottom of it ...
