Maybe I should mention that my system is now 5 years old and many
other programs require a newer version of libc.

We use subversion for vntex and it turned out to be pretty unstable.
We first used it at sourceforge. It often produced svnserve processes
doing nothing else than consuming 98% CPU time. If such a process is
running, nobody can access the repository.

Sometimes it din't work and we had to run "svnadmin recover $REPOS".
This is not a big problem, everything worked then. We never lost any
data. But it is quite annoying.

But once I got a "permission denied" message when running "svnadmin
recover" while the file permissions looked ok.

The only solution was to copy everything to my machine, compile a
special version of svn linked to the same version of BerkelyDB as used
at sourceforge and dump the database.

Then I set up a server on my machine. It works pretty well when I use
it myself. When Thanh checked out the stuff it was broken again.
Running "svnadmin recover" gave me the error message "permission denied".

I had to run "svnadmin recover" as root and fix the file permissions and
ownerships manually.

We never lost any data.

If you want to use subversion I recommend to install it soon and
create a "sandbox repository" which people can play with. So you can
get some experience before you switch from p4 to svn.

Despite all the problems we had I think that subversion is a good
thing. I have no experience with p4 or CVS, I decided to use svn
because it claimed to handle binary files, and in this respect I had
not been disappointed.

Thanks for the hints,
  Reinhard

Microsoft isn't the answer. Microsoft is the question, and the answer is NO.
