    Is it worth the trouble?

I think so, very much.  Not only for the space savings, but also because
then the binaries have a better chance of working on different flavors
of the os.  When we statically link in libc (and the others, to a lesser
extent), there's a good chance of libc/kernel mismatches, which have
caused plenty of problems for me in the past.
