It would be even better to dynamically link libc and the other
"standard" objects, and statically link libstdc++ and libgcc_s.

Thomas, I had the impression that libgcc_s was a shared version of
libgcc.a (which is also still installed), but maybe I was wrong?  Sorry,
I'm not able to investigate in depth right now, but will when I have a
chance -- if you and Nelson and everyone else don't figure everything
out first :).
