Aha. Yes, that sure sounds like the problem, since the test is using the
.PROGNAME feature of texmf.cnf, and with --enable-shared `basename $0`
(effectively) is not "kpsewhich" and thus the lookup fails. I can
probably dream up some workaround for it. Meanwhile, at least we can be
pretty sure it is not some deep problem in the code. --thanks, karl.
