The buildscript does the following, which might explain why the test 
fails:
# set TEXMFROOT and TEXMFLOCAL
sed -i \
   -e "s|^TEXMFROOT.*|TEXMFROOT = $TEXMFROOT|" \
   -e "s|^TEXMFLOCAL.*|TEXMFLOCAL = \$TEXMFROOT/texmf-local|" \
   texk/kpathsea/texmf.cnf
