[tex-k] Extra space before page number after \batchmode

Two observations:
(1) Both on macOS with "BasicTeX 2020" and on Linux with TeX Live 2020,
the 'q' path issues
This is TeX, Version 3.14159265 (TeX Live 2020) (preloaded format=tex)

without a newline after '\batchmode'; looks not good.
(2) On macOS all three paths issue page '[1]', but on Linux, I get page
'[2]' in all three paths, e.g., for 'q', 'attachment.log' reads
