No, they aren't, of course! 
Hiragana - grammatical variations, connectives etc
Katakana - foreign words
Kanji - core text
(cum grano salis)

Interestingly, Katakana and Hiragana served exactly the opposite
function before around 1950 (?? not sure about the exact year),
that is foreign words were written in Hiragana, and the grammer stuff
in Katakana.

Arabic is easy, right? How many there are, even including the
initial/terminal/normal variations? A few hundred? That is the amount
of Kanji ever 10 year student needs to be able to read and write.

How to learn? Pull the finger out of your ... and study, every day,
every day, every free second. Repeat repeat repeat.
