As far as installer is concerned, the basic idea was:

 * If there is a directory called "archive", the (compressed) files in
   this directory are installed.

 * If there is a texmf tree, then the installer assumes that a live
   system is present and files are copied.

 * If neither a directory "archive" nor a directory "texmf" exists,
   the installer assumes that there is no TeX Live in the current
   working directory and installs from the network instead.

No black magic involved.
