should work, or (with slightly different effects)
% \usepackage[utf8]{inputenc} % standard UTF-8 input encoding
% \usepackage[T1]{fontenc} % use T1 font encoding as default
% \usepackage{textalpha} % define LGR font encoding as Greek default

At least they work in texlive 2015 (the above are from the comments in
lgrenc.dfu)
I'm not sure if that code was in texlive 2012, I think so.
