In his original message, Dan mentionned such things as block editing and
mouseless operations, so I don't think he really qualifies as a beginner.

Anyway, there exists a simpler version of Vim for Windows, called Cream:
  http://cream.sourceforge.net/
I've never tested it, though, so I can only mention it. The good thing is that
it is a configuration of Vim, not a fork, so you can always switch to the
``real'' Vim.
