kpsewhich agaramond.map
if not, try running texhash to update the filename database

That I'm doing something wrong is obvious...
updmap-sys --enable Map=font.map
works fine on my system too. However, it complains it can't find the
map which lives in
/usr/share/texmf/fonts/map/dvips/psfonts/agaramond.map. This is the
reason I asked about the preferred location. But I should prabably
begin by upgrading texlive and do it from the beginning again. It has
worked before...
