Well, I do not just want to keep it in the database. I am seeking for a method to generate a single dash in my final output, since latex will always put two dashes in the pdf file. Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks,

I have old entries that contain only one dash and I just checked -
they typeset just like with two dashes. So you can just do it,
nothing special needed. It's not clear to me why there is this
convention of double dashes ... maybe someone knows?
Given that the dashes look the same after being typeset, why should
you want to have single dashes in the database?
