[texhax] citing authors without natbib

Thanks all for replying. 

It seems my question was misunderstood.

Basically, is there a package or some other way to extract the authors' names without being tied to natbib?.

Sometimes journals will provide their own in-house bst file, so the natbib bst files are not an option.

so something like:

blah \showauthors{Smith123} blah \cite{Smith123}


would give:

blah Smith et al. blah [1]


without using natbib .
