I've never used the xwatermark package, but you can also use eso-pic to
generate watermarks, e.g.,:

\usepackage{color}
\usepackage{eso-pic}
\definecolor{lightgray}{gray}{.80}

\begin{document}

  \AddToShipoutPicture{%
    \AtTextCenter{%
      \makebox(0,0)[c]{\resizebox{\textwidth}{!}{%
        \rotatebox{45}{\textsf{\textbf{\color{lightgray}DRAFT}}}}} 
    }
  }

Clearly, you can put anything you want inside this. Maybe this helps
you.
