This still works with overpic:
\begin{overpic}[grid]{<image-file>}
\put(20,10){\includegrahpics[]{<photoshop-mask-image>}
\end{overpic}
On the other hand, if you are going to mess about with photoshop or
whatever, why not create a new image-file that masks out what you want?
