[texhax] mf font installation and use

I have typically used latex without specifying font. 

Now I would like to use the hge.mf font from ctan.
I installed it in 
/usr/local/share/texmf/fonts/source/public/hge/
on my debian linux system.

It does not work.

what steps have I left out.

A simple demo file.tex that printed
out "how now brown cow" would
solve my problem.
