[texhax] BibTeX middle initials disappearing; has this problem been solved?

It's not really an issue with BibTeX, it's an issue with the database
entry. The two formats that BibTeX recognises are
author = "D. E. Knuth"
and
author = "Knuth, D. E."
Anything without whitespace separation is one word: that is the rule.
Like any other part of the database spec. you have to follow it: for
example, the fact that names have to be separated by "and" often
confuses people but it is part of the spec.
