Well, that's the kerning for the math italic font.  You might be
tempted to use text italic font:

    ${\it HW} = {\it WH}$

but then you'd have to watch out for ligatures:

    $coefficient$

    $\it coefficient$

If this is a product of c, o, e, ..., n, t, then the ligatures are
inappropriate; but if it is a multi-letter identifier/variable name,
then \it is the way to go.
