[texhax] Odd behavior in a \mathop

If you have a single-letter mathop it gets vertically centered unless you 
put it in a box.  For example, I normally define the expectation operator 
by

\newcommand{\expect}{\mathop{\mbox{$\mathbb E$}}\nolimits}
