It is not quite so simple for dynamical and structural formulae: try
writing a ChemML to TeX translator to find out why.

Looking at it another way: built-up fractions, banded matrices, limits
etc are diagramatic representations that have been stylised and become
almost text.

A better distinction would be between 1.5 dimensional stuff and truly
2-(or more)-dimensional stuff.
