Alternatively you could use the package comment.sty, create two comments,
and enclose the version dependent stuff in the appropriate comment
environments. Then you can switch between the two versions just by
switching between include and exclude in the comment definition
(see documentation for comment.sty).
At least, this is what I do in such a case right now. I admit not having
played too much with this package yet, so I cannot tell how well it works.
