[texhax] Fig. instead of Figure

Hi,

I am trying to figure out how to get figure labels such as
"Fig. 3" instead of "Figure 3" (automatically).

Relevant packages that I load:

\usepackage{epsfig}
\usepackage[hang,tight]{subfigure}
\usepackage[font=footnotesize,labelfont=bf,format=hang]{caption}

I spent time with the "caption" and "subfig" documentation, but failed
to find the solution.
