Thank you for this Martin.  I've used this trick on
Unix.  So it seems that the log file is being written,
and so occupies space on disk.

I've just tried the same trick on Windows, and it
seems to work.

As you may know, I'm interested in running TeX as
a daemon, and so am interested in the input/output
behaviour of TeX, and in these sort of tricks.
