Hi Peter,
It might be better to choose another graphics format. Depending on your
workflow (LaTeX or pdfLaTeX) I would choose .eps or .pdf as the export
format in R respectively. This has the added advantage of allowing for
transparancy, in case you're using a coloured background in Beamer.
