[texhax] controlling line width

hello friends,
how to control length of horizontal line, instead using \hrule{.\textwidth}{2pt}
i want the line width change automaticly when margins of pages changed.
for example when i use horizontal line i itemize environment, why that
line width cannot follow margins of itemize environment?
