    the inner margin must be half of the outer margin, since  
    the inner margins will butt against each other in the spread.

Except for the physical fold-into-the-spine of the (typical) book, which
makes it appear much less.  I've had to read many books where the words
at the end of a line on a left-hand page, and/or the beginning of a line
on a right-hand page, are on a curve, disappearing into the spine, while
there's tons of "wasted" white space on the outside.  Very frustrating.
I've mostly seen it in novels/etc.
