Tom Sgouros and John C. Frain have provided good information on this.
I'd just like to add that you might find the ``pdfpages'' package for
pdflatex on CTAN of use --- it's nice in that one gets immediate
previewing of the imposition, and is readily customizable with
excellent documentation.
Hans Hagen's ConTeXt's ``texexec'' CLI tool does imposition as well....
