This has been discussed on comp.text.tex in the past.

It can be done w/ a bit of shell scripting (look for all .tfm files and 
generate a .tex file based on that list).

IMO, such brute force approaches aren't really appropriate. Better to 
read all the documentation (esp. psnfss2e), look at extant samples 
(http://www.tug.org/fonts/ lists some nice samplers including Peter 
Flynn's nifty one), or look at the TeX Showcase, 
http://www.tug.org/texshowcase to see examples of people using fonts.

Before I use a font, I learn where it came from, its history, and think 
carefully about how it might best be used, and then create a small font 
sampler book or other exemplar of it. You can see some of these at
