[texhax] How to typeset a superscript * in a formula

A^* looked fine to me, although b^* put the * perhaps a bit too low.
Is that your concern.  A stupid and quick dirty fix for that is
b^{^ \scriptstyle *} although this puts it a bit higher than ideal, I'll
admit.  I've never thought that just b^* looked too bad.
The positioning right to left seems ok for either straight LaTeX or
with amsmath.
