As a relatively new member of this community, I have found people to
generally be quite helpful. This list has also been helpful in replies
to my new-user questions. I have, in fact, gotten helpful answers from
Robin in the past, often pointers to particular spots in the FAQ, and
have seen him give other such pointers to other people.

Usually, I am of the school that says "You don't make yourself any
taller by putting someone else in a hole". But, I think that in the
particular response to the particular message, two things mitigate
this.
1) The fact that Robin replies often, and with helpful replies
2) The fact that the OP was not only one that had a RTFM response (I
have asked such questions, and will, in my ignorance, possibly ask such
again) but was in duplicate and contained gibberish.

I don't think we should expect people who ask questions to be experts
at TeX, or even experts at asking questions about TeX. But a certain
level of politeness should be expected, and when posters violate those
levels, then responders may do so also.

Just my two cents.

Peter
