On the contrary, there are no simple questions about verbatim.

verbatim suspends a bunch of the normal text processing rules in order
to do its work.  Others can perhaps add more detail, but that's enough
for me.

To see how to write instead, check out a package that uses it.  There
is a code.sty you can get from ctan, or a vcode.sty you can get from
me (its web address is down) that you can copy.  Others can perhaps
suggest other packages that will help.
