Hi Ian,

here is a tiny hack which I'm using since quite a bit.

Just save it in gbpara.sty and use it as:

...
\usepackage{gbpara}
...

\begin{document}

...
%% Here starts a par which we want to be numbered
\gbpara{}I'm a numbered paragraph! ...
...
