the sensible thing is to change the layout of the page header and
footer to match your design. look at the fancyhdr package (the
documentation distributed with it is good and comprehensive). if your
system doesn't have fancyhdr.dvi, look for fancyhdr on www.tug.org
if you want page numbers in page references (for example) to be
similarly affected, i recommend writing a macro to wrap around the
normal \pageref that you use for making reference to a page.
*don't* even *think* of redefining \thepage (the macro that delivers
the page number itself). such redefinitions characteristically work
for a bit, but then come back and bite you. very hard.
