Hi Norbert,
this is what I assume too.  If Japanese characters are displayed
properly but not \rightarrow, then I suppose that the font being used
doesn't contain this particular glyph.  In this case fontconfig will
try to borrow this glyph from another font.  So I think that
fontconfig might be involved too (or not, if it fails).

What I don't understand is why LESSCHARSET had to be set explicitly
when the the UTF-8 coded Japanese characters were diplayed properly
already.
