perhaps I should simply use the currently distributed xdvi, xdvi-xaw
as compiled by Dick to work with XQuartz 2.7.9 and copy them or
symlink them from 2016 to the earlier TeXLive ? wouldn't that work ?

thus my earlier texlive/YYYY would be slightly altered but with 
a functional xdvi ?
