it uses the TeX fonts.

I think the problem was actually in the newtx package. The version
that came via an update last Friday introduced some file rtxmi.tfm.
(By the way, a file with the same name is in the txfonts package, too.)
Today there was a new update of newtx in texlive where rtxmi.tfm has
been removed again from newtx and matplotlib works fine as it used to
do.
