I have made such test on my Linux machine. The directory size is 789M
(as reported by du -sh), when zipped with -9r the file size (reported
by ls -l) is 644748349. It was always run as a shell script containing
mount+copy+unmount or mount+zip+unmount and the real time is reported.

1. copying a tree of files: 4m26.133s
2. zipping the tree directly to the vfat usb: 2m6.070s
3. unzipping the file from USB to SDD: 1m17.653s
4. zipping the files on HD: 1m27.616s
5. copying the zip file: 2m0.836s

My computer is old, I have USB2, not USB3.
