User without root privileges is not allowed to create /usr/texbin
which makes me believe that adapting
~/.MacOSX/environment.plist
(or something similar) would be the only solution to add TeX binaries
to PATH, visible by both GUI applications and Terminal. One would need
a symlink like
~/Applications/MacTeX/texbin (probably a different one)
pointing to the place where TeX binaries are actually installed.
Preference Pane would then only change that symlink (when working in
"user mode").
But no, if I ever used the word "slight", it wasn't exactly the right choice.
