    As far as I know with TeXLive xetex doesn't find otf
        fonts in the texmf-trees with the default configuration. 

That is not true.  That is how I use it.  If you use {foo.otf} instead
of {Foo} it will be found.

Of course it is true that there are deficiencies in fontspec wrt
filename lookups (e.g., you have to explicitly specify the variants).  I
am well aware of this and Will and I have been talking (at length) about
ways to remedy the situation.  I hope it will improve someday.
